Following the release of the January Update, players in the North America West region will notice the implementation of the updated CAPTCHA system in game.
In order to test the new CAPTCHA system’s potential impacts, we will be temporarily deploying it in the North America West region only. During the time that CAPTCHA is active, we will closely monitor its effectiveness against bots as well as feedback from players surrounding their experiences with the system.
This new CAPTCHA system utilizes image-based CAPTCHA that players will periodically have to solve when entering new world map areas, not including raids or dungeons. Players will have a 30 second timer during which they must complete the CAPTCHA, and will fail when the time runs out. Once the CAPTCHA has been successfully completed, players be able to resume play as normal and will not experience another CAPTCHA for some time. If a player fails three separate CAPTCHAS, they will be temporarily removed from the game.
Players using controllers will be able to interact with the CAPTCHA prompts using their joystick, and will not need access to a mouse or keyboard to complete them.
If the results of this test show that CAPTCHA is effective at removing bots from the game and does not greatly inhibit player experience, we will consider rolling this system out all regions. We will let players know our findings and next steps after the test concludes. Thank you for your patience and participation with this testing!
